A petite beautiful lady who punches well beyond her weight class in every way – this is Amy Ang.
As a child, Amy’s ambition was to become a policewoman, but due to her petite stature, she was rejected. However, that rejection became a beautiful diversion and she stumbled upon an enduring career in the hotel world starting from the ground up as a sales secretary. During the early days, Amy, who was more fluent and comfortable in Mandarin, picked up English through diligently copying newspaper articles daily. Her disciplined work ethic, a flair for sales and an unassuming charm propelled her into actual sales manager roles before slowly climbing the ranks to her current role as Director of Commercial at an iconic hotel in Singapore.
Through a 30-year career, the world we live in today has changed dramatically from the time she started. Now, her Mandarin reading, presenting and writing skills are her superpower and Amy is the darling of many companies dealing with key guests from China – a top traveller demographic to Singapore today with a very high spend.
Amy is consulted widely on her expertise in designing unforgettable experiences, building sales teams that have a holistic perspective and has mentored many young aspiring sales people in the hotel industry today. Her strength lies in her broadness of mind and willingness to experiment to accomplish new visions and ideas.
During her free time, she does Zumba regularly to the latest Kpop hits and enjoys quality time with her daughter and husband café hopping. Her highly competitive streak ensures that she wins ‘best dressed’ at many overseas tradeshows and her team practices intensely for any upcoming annual dinner and dance performances.
This National Day, Hadasity would like to shine a light on Amy – a role model for many generations of Singaporean women. Her story is simple and hidden, a mirror of many women of her generation who forged their own path despite the odds or outdated views cast her way.
